Jay joined the Robertson School of Media and Culture as an assistant professor in advertising in the fall of 2015. He currently teaches portfolio and campaigns courses while continuing his professional work as a freelance creative director. He’s led student teams to win numerous awards at the Richmond Show and the ADDY awards on the local, regional and national levels.
One of Jay’s teaching strengths is his connection to the industry. He’s worked at Richmond-based ad agencies including The Martin Agency, The King Agency, Release The Hounds, Big River and most recently Dotted Line Collaborations. His professional involvement carries over into the classroom as he brings in regional and national clients such as Anthem, Capital One, The Doorways, Virginia Tourism and VCU’s College Behavioral and Emotional Health Institute (COBE).
Prior to becoming a full-time faculty member Jay spent three years as an adjunct at the Robertson School teaching art direction, writing and portfolio courses. His adjunct experience also includes the VCU Brandcenter, having taught Portfolio Development to second year graduate students. He holds a B. S. from Virginia Tech and a M. S. from the VCU Brandcenter where he graduated at the top of his class.
